Makalu Trekking

Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8,481 metres (27,825 ft) and is located 19 km (12 mi) southeast of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and China. One of the eight-thousanders, Makalu is an iso lated peak whose shape is a four-sided pyramid.

Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks. Kangchungtse, or Makalu II (7,678 m) lies about 3 km (2 mi) north-northwest of the main summit. Rising about 5 km (3.1 mi) northnortheast of the main summit across a broad plateau, and connected to Kangchungtse by a narrow, 7,200 m saddle, is Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m). The trek starts with a flight to Tumlingtar just above the Arun river. A great deal of the trek is through terraced farmland and rustic villages. Essentially, the Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Dhaulagiri regions are not touristy areas and one needs special trekking and camping permits to visit the region.

Makalu Trek itinerary:

Day 01: Pick up from airport and drop to Hotel
Day 02: Full day sightseeing around of the Kathmandu valley & Overnight at hotel.
Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar (860m) from Kathmandu & trek to Khadbari (1,040m), 4 hrs
Day 04: Trek Khadbari to Chichila (1,830m), 5/6 hrs
Day 05: Trek Chichila to Num (1,490m), 5 hrs
Day 06: Trek Num to Sedua(1,460m), 5/6 hrs
Day 07: Trek Sedua to Tashi Gaon (2,070m), 5 hrs
Day 08: Trek Tashi Gaon to Kauma (3,470m), 6 hrs
Day 09: Rest / Exploration day at Kauma.
Day 10: Trek Kauma to Mumbuk (3,570m), 5 hrs
Day 11: Trek Mumbuk to Nhe Kharka (3,000m), 6 hrs
Day 12: Trek Nhe Kharka to Sherson (4,615m), 7 hrs
Day 13: Trek Sherson to Makalu Base Camp (5,000m), 4/5 hrs
Day 14: Explore Makalu Base Camp.
Day 15: Trek Makalu Base Camp to Nhe Kharka (3,000m), 7 hrs
Day 16: Trek Nhe kharka to Mumbuk (3,570m), 6 hrs
Day 17: Trek Mumbuk to Kauma (3,470m), 5 hrs
Day 18: Trek Kauma to Tashi Gaon (2,070m), (5 hrs
Day 19: Trek Tashi Gaun to Pukuwa (1,520m), 6 hrs
Day 20: Trek Pukuwa to Bumling (1,160m), 5 hrs
Day 21: Trek Bumling to Tumlingtar (860m), 4 hrs
Day 22: Flight: Tumlingtar and stay overnight at hotel
Day 23: Free day to explore, and enjoy Kathmandu and stay overnight at hotel
Day 24: Drop to airport for final departure.
